You CAN build a company culture remotely

"It's impossible to keep a good company culture when working remotely."

Here are 3 thoughts why I disagree:

1️⃣ remote culture is different

It is true: A remote culture will never be the same as a culture in an office context. But that doesn't mean that building a company culture is impossible.

If your company culture, e.g., is based on the values of individualism, freedom, and self-determination, remote work is the best option to manifest those values.

2️⃣ remote cultures need other measures

Maintaining a company culture in an office context might be possible through meetings at the coffee machines, annual Christmas parties, and team events.

Maintaining a company remote company culture needs other measures like

- scheduled team meetings

- the use of tools and technologies like @dive

Alexander put it in great words when saying:

"Don't try to copy what worked in the physical world and put it in the digital world. Instead, think about digital-first solutions."

3️⃣ remote cultures create employee loyalty

Often I have the feeling that the word "culture" is confused with the word "loyalty" when talking about remote work.

The real worry is not if the company culture will still exist but if the employees will work like usual when working remotely.

The no. 1 requirement for remote work is trust. If this value is not part of the company's culture, a remote-first approach won't work.

Is anybody here managing a remote team?
