It took me 3 hours to write a single-page copy.
After multiple months in the job, I realized why:
I focused too much on writing and too little on listening.
When I started as a copywriter at Project 33, I made one major mistake:
Instead of just paying attention to what the person I was writing for was trying to tell me, I was mentally already one step ahead:
"This sentence I can use as a hook."
"That phrase I can use as the final takeaway."
"This could be a fitting CTA to create engagement."
In the end, I completely lost the point the person was trying to make - which was why I had to rewrite a copy at least 3 or 4 times.
In my opinion, the terminology "copywriting" is misleading.
It's not only about writing, phrases, and SEO optimization.
In fact, at first, you have to forget about your writing task completely.
It's really about listening and paying attention to the person you're writing for:
- What is the person telling me?
- What is the person trying to bring across?
- What is the main message here? (sometimes not even apparent to the speaker)
Since I realized that, my average time spent on a single copy dropped to around 45 - 60 Minutes.
Takeaway:
If you feel like it takes ages to write a copy, control your actionism.
Sit tight, forget about writing, and just listen with full attention and curiosity.
You might even want to listen to a recording multiple times until you really know what the person is trying to tell you.
This time investment will payout in less editing, hesitating, and rewriting.
