Are you thinking about quitting your job?

I quit my dream job after only 3 months.

Both choosing and quitting it were 2 of my best decisions.

After finishing my studies in 2019, I had a feeling which in German we would describe as Fernweh - a strong urge to leave the known behind and discover the world.

I defined 2 possibilities for myself to fulfill this desire:

1. Working as an Entertainer on Cape Verde for TUI

2. Backpacking

After a lot of doubts and headaches, I chose option 1. Having already worked as an entertainer, I knew that this was a job that fulfilled me with passion and joy.

It is the excitement of living in other countries, meeting new people daily, nonstop action, and being in the center of attention that makes it both draining and rewarding at the same time.

Just 3 months after returning to my long believed dream job, I realized that I was unhappy. This job couldn't fulfill my desires for freedom and self-determination anymore. I grew out of it.

It was a hard pill for me to swallow. But shortly after, I quit my job and returned home, feeling somehow a loser.

Failing in my first attempt to satisfy my "Fernweh," I turned to option number 2 and started backpacking. This decision led to my best experiences and after all to my life in Brazil as a remote worker.

Looking back, I am thankful that I first made a "wrong" decision in choosing to work as an entertainer because it made me realize that this phase of my life has passed and gave me the strength to stick to my second decision.

Also, when backpacking, I often faced doubts, especially in moments of discomfort and uncertainty: "What are you doing here? You could be in Cape Verde, working in your dream job. Why did you quit it?

But because I made this first wrong decision, I knew that I was where I should be: Traveling in freedom. My wrong decision turned out to be the most important decision for my steadiness and avoidance of regret.

Takeaways:

1. Don't worry about making the wrong decisions. They strip us of doubt and help us make good decisions by showing us what we DON'T want.

2. Don't cling to things that once made you happy. Chances are that they have passed, and you have changed.

This also serves as a personal reminder. I am the person who needs those 2 pieces of advice the most. I hope this helped you with your decision making.
